30th Anniversary of PA Dutch Merchants in the Market

The year was 1980. Frank Rizzo was Mayor and Jimmy Carter was in the White House. The Phillies, led by Steve Carlton, Pete Rose and Mike Schmidt, were driving towards their first championship. Commuter trains still rumbled in and out of the train shed above. And below it, the Reading Terminal Market was a near ghost town. Only around 20 merchants were left in a decaying building that lacked heat and air conditioning. There was no Convention Center – the surrounding neighborhood was noteworthy mostly for its array of X-rated movie houses and dive bars.
In the summer of that year a couple of young managers for the Reading Company, Jeff Algatt and Steve Park, drove down to Booth?s Corner Farmers Market and invited about a dozen Amish farmers to set up shop in the vacant northwest corner of the Market. Dave Esh of Hatville Deli was one of them, and says today ?They didn?t even want their children spending time here, it was so bad.?

Much has changed for the better since then, and our Amish merchants deserve a great deal of credit. This month we celebrate 30 years of the Amish in the Market. Today, the Amish have become synonymous with the Reading Terminal Market, running 13 stands from Wednesday through Saturday.
On Thursday, September 30th, at 11am we will celebrate the 30th anniversary with a special program featuring the original and current standholders, the former Reading Company managers, and a free slice of shoo fly pie for every customer (while supplies last). The festivities will take place in Piano Court.
