"100 Years of Spring" Stravinsky Celebration Comes To Reading Terminal Market

“100 Years of Spring” Stravinsky Celebration Comes To Reading Terminal Market
June 9, 2012, 12 pm to 1:30 pm

Venders, shoppers, and music enthusiasts can enjoy the sound of a grand piano in an unlikely place. Composer/musician Neil Alexander brings his solo piano arrangement of Stravinsky?s Le Sacre Du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) to the new Rick Nichols Room in Reading Terminal Market for a free public performance. The music is widely recognizable from the ?Walt Disney?s Fantasia? segment spanning Earth inception to dinosaur demise. Captivated as a child by the film experience, Alexander entered a long relationship with Stravinsky?s music. Next year marks the 100-year anniversary of the Paris premier of The Rite of Spring and the riotous reaction allegedly occurring on that historic night. Alexander begins an international series of centennial performances and is delighted to include Philadelphia?s Reading Terminal Market. Additional music includes samplings of Gershwin and Alexander?s original compositions. Other free area performances include Broad Street Market in Harrisburg at 11 am on June 8, and First Reformed Church in Lancaster as part of Lancaster Summer Arts Festival at 7 pm June. The farm/food market performances are part of an effort to bring music, originally directed at audiences of elite society, to places of public gathering where social division is less significant and advocate the coexistence and importance of both food and music. ?100 Years of Spring? is a sponsored project of Artspire, a program of New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), a 501©(3) tax-exempt organization.
